Nucor to Acquire Skyline Steel
May 18, 2012 - Nucor Corp. has signed a Stock Purchase Agreement to acquire the membership interests of Skyline Steel LLC and its subsidiaries from ArcelorMittal, for approximately $605 million. Skyline Steel will be a wholly owned subsidiary of Nucor Corp. and will maintain its headquarters in Parsippany, N.J.
Schnitzer Provides Outlook for Q3 of Fiscal 2012
May 18, 2012 - Schnitzer Steel Industries, Inc. announced its market outlook for its third quarter of fiscal 2012, noting that margins have compressed from the second quarter as a slight increase in average gross ferrous selling prices has been more than offset by higher costs of both raw materials and freight.
Canadian Trade Tribunal Initiates Inquiry into Welded Carbon Steel Pipe
May 18, 2012 - The Canadian International Trade Tribunal initiated a preliminary injury inquiry into a complaint by Novamerican Steel Inc. and Bolton Steel Tube Co. Ltd. that they have suffered injury as a result of the dumping of certain carbon steel welded pipe from Chinese Taipei, the Republic of India, the Sultanate of Oman, the Republic of Korea, Thailand, the Republic of Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates, and the subsidizing of these goods from the Republic of India, the Sultanate of Oman, and the United Arab Emirates.
Excellence Award Presented to Chevrolet Volt Team for AHSS Use
May 18, 2012 - The Automotive Applications Council of the Steel Market Development Institute honored General Motors’ Chevrolet Volt design and engineering team with its annual Automotive Excellence Award. The team was recognized during the Great Designs in Steel seminar for its efficient and effective use of advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) in the development of the Volt’s upper- and lower-body structures.

March Steel Shipments up 1.3% from February
May 17, 2012 - U.S. steel mills shipped 8,512,825 net tons for the month of March 2012, a 1.3% increase from the 8,407,343 net tons shipped in the previous month according to the latest release from AISI.

May 16, 2012 - The Executive Board of ThyssenKrupp AG informed the Supervisory Board of its decision to examine strategic options for the plants of Steel Americas in Brazil and the U.S., in parallel with further technical and commercial optimization, to which the Supervisory Board assented. The options may involve a partnership or a sale to a best owner whose strategy can better utilize the plants.
Service Center Shipments Show Small Bounce Back in April
May 16, 2012 - April service center shipments of aluminum and steel were up slightly in both the U.S. and Canada, an improvement from the year-over-year declines seen in March, according to the latest report from the Metals Service Center Institute.

Canadian Agency to Investigate Dumping, Subsidizing of Carbon Steel Welded Pipe
May 15, 2012 - The Canada Border Services Agency is initiating investigations into the alleged injurious dumping of carbon steel welded pipe. The Agency is also initiating investigations into the alleged injurious subsidizing of some carbon steel welded pipe from the Republic of India, the Sultanate of Oman and the United Arab Emirates.
RG Steel to Restart L-Blast Furnace at Sparrows Point
May 15, 2012 - RG Steel issued a release that on May 12 the company was to restart its L Blast Furnace at Sparrows Point. The L Blast Furnace had been shut down on May 9 as scheduled for a routine maintenance outage.
Northwest Pipe Reports Q1 2012 Financial Results
May 15, 2012 - Northwest Pipe reported that net sales for the quarter ended March 31, 2012, increased 27.6% to $142.2 million compared to $111.5 million in the same quarter in 2011. Gross profit was $16.5 million (11.6% of net sales), an increase from $14.8 million (13.2% of net sales) a year ago.
voestalpine Establishes Balance Group for Natural Gas

Siemens Furnace Switchgear Achieves Rated Currents of 4,500 Amperes
May 11, 2012 - The Simetal Sivac-X 4K furnace switchgear from Siemens has reliably switched a rated current of more than 4,500 amperes with a single circuit breaker in the test laboratory during the course of a successful type test according to IEC 62271. The switchgear has a rated voltage of 40.5 kilovolts, and can supply EAFs with power up to 300 MVA.
Timken Supplies Bearings for Large Vertical Slag Mill in China
May 11, 2012 - The Timken Co. has supplied bearings for one of China's largest vertical slag mills, featuring a 5.7-meter (18.7-feet) grinding table. The mill was developed by CITIC Heavy Industries Co. Ltd., one of China's top manufacturers of cement-producing equipment.
