ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe Welcomes 328 New Apprentices Sep. 3, 2010 - ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe AG has taken on 328 new apprentices in 19 occupations with the startup this week of its latest apprentice training year. To ease the transition from school to working life, all newcomers attend a week-long initiation course in which they meet other apprentices, learn about the company, and spend time focusing on workplace health and safety.

Steel Import Permits Decrease 15% in August Sep. 2, 2010 - Steel import permit applications reached a total of 2,082,000 net tons for August, a 15% decrease from the 2,436,000 permit tons recorded in July and a 14% decrease from the July preliminary imports total of 2,415,000 net tons, according to the latest report from AISI.

Horsehead Updates Restart Schedule for PA Refining Facility Sep. 2, 2010 - Horsehead Holding Corp. noted that the Monaca, Pa., plant's zinc oxide and metal refinery remains temporarily shut down. Regarding zinc oxide production, the company currently expects to restart all four Larvik furnaces by the end of September; it expects to restart the zinc oxide and refined zinc metal columns in stages starting in November.

Gerdau Açominas Selects Tenova to Supply Walking Beam Furnaces Aug. 27, 2010 - Gerdau Açominas and Tenova LOI Italimpianti have agreed upon the supply of two walking beam furnaces for slabs to be installed in the new Plate/Steckel mills of the Gerdau Açominas Plant in Ouro Branco, Brazil. The furnaces will each have a production capacity of 220/265 tonnes per hour.

EPA Orders Tonawanda Coke to Comply with Clean Water Act Aug. 27, 2010 - The U.S. EPA has ordered the Tonawanda Coke to comply with its Clean Water Act permit. Among other violations, Tonawanda Coke is discharging industrial wastewater containing cyanide in excess of its permit limits into the town of Tonawanda’s sanitary sewer system.
