Industry Suppliers / ABB ABB to Modernize SSAB Hot Strip Mill

March 2006 — ABB’s Center of Excellence for Hot Rolling Mills, Sweden, has been selected by SSAB Tunnplåt, one of Europe’s leading steel sheet manufacturers, to supply a new control system for its hot strip mill in Borlänge, Sweden.

ABB’s scope of supply includes a new control system based on state-of-the-art control technology, System 800xA, with thickness/profile control and a new Human System Interface (HIS). ABB will also replace the old auxiliary drives with new ones.

Delivery is scheduled for the summers of 2006 and 2007. Some of the parts, such as the drives, will be delivered during the summer of 2006, while the major part of the modernization will be carried out during the summer of 2007.


SSAB Tunnplåt AB is the largest steel sheet manufacturer in Scandinavia and one of Europe's leaders in the development and manufacture of advanced high-strength steel grades. The company has an annual production capacity of more than 2.5 million tonnes. The company's rolling mills and coating plants are mainly located in Borlänge, Sweden.
