SSAB Orders Coiler System from SMS Demag
Sep. 1, 2006
Sep. 2006 — SSAB Tunnplåt AB in Borlänge, Sweden, has placed an order with SMS Demag, Germany, to supply a new coiler for its hot strip mill that will be capable of coiling high-strength steel grades up to 1100 Mpa.
SMS Demag’s scope of supply comprises the mechanical equipment, including the carry-over table, hydraulic side guard, pinch roll unit, pinch-roll polishing unit and coil transfer car No. 2. SMS Demag will also supply a tilter that will function as a transfer to the coil conveyor system. The electrical and automation systems will be supplied by ABB Sweden.
The new coiler with Step Control (a control system for gently winding the initial wraps) will replace the existing Coiler No. 2.
SMS Demag worked with SSAB Tunnplåt to develop a revamp concept that will minimize production disruptions. A plant shutdown of only two days will be needed for connecting the new coiler. The hot strip mill will operate with only one coiler for eleven days before the new coiler starts its production phase. The performance test will take place after the 2008 summer shutdown.
This new project builds upon the cooperation between SSAB and SMS Demag which began in the eighties. SMS Demag has previously carried out the following modernization work on the existing hot strip mill: Equipping of the finishing mill with AGC (Automatic Gage Control) and CVCPLUS (Continuously Variable Crown) for stands F2 to F6 with the pertaining models, and a cooling model, as well as provision of a completely new roughing mill.
SMS Demag AG forms part of the Metallurgical Plant and Rolling Mill Technology Business Area of the SMS group. SMS GmbH is the holding for a group of companies internationally active in plant construction and mechanical engineering relating to the processing of steel, non-ferrous metals and plastics. The group is divided into the Business Areas of Metallurgical Plant and Rolling Mill Technology, Tube, Long Product and Forging Technology and Plastics Technology. In the year 2005 some 9,250 employees worldwide generated a turnover of about EUR 2.33 billion.
