Steel Producers / CMC/SMI CMC Opens New Birmingham Scrap Processing Facility

Jun. 29, 2005

Commercial Metals Co. opened its newest scrap processing facility in Birmingham, Ala.

The new facility, known as CMC Birmingham, will primarily provide processed scrap to SMI Steel–Alabama, CMC's steel minimill also located in Birmingham. CMC Birmingham will also engage in all other facets of industrial and peddler scrap purchasing.

Operating as part of CMC's Domestic Mills segment, the newly opened facility will establish CMC as a leading scrap processor in the Birmingham full-service scrap market.

Dale Schmelzle, VP and General Manager of SMI Steel–Alabama, said, "We are excited about our new yard and the tremendous opportunities it will provide us in the Birmingham area."

Headquartered in Irving, Texas, Commercial Metals Co. and subsidiaries manufacture, recycle and market steel and metal products, related materials and services through a network including steel minimills, steel fabrication and processing plants, construction-related product warehouses, a copper tube mill, metal recycling facilities and marketing and distribution offices in the United States and in strategic overseas markets.
