Concast to Supply Continuous Bloom Caster for Posco

Oct. 2006 — Pohang Iron & Steel Co., Ltd. (Posco), Korea, has awarded Concast, Switzerland, a contract for the supply of a three-strand continuous bloom caster.
The caster will have a 16.5-meter casting radius and multi-point straightening. It will be equipped with Concast technologies including plate-type molds with mold stirrer, rotating strand stirrer, air-mist cooling system, and mechanical soft reduction at the pinch roll unit (a total of eleven modules). Concast will also supply a torch cutter with deburrer and bloom marking.
The caster will increase the capacity of Pohang Works to 1.1 million tonnes/year. It will be used to produce 400- x 500-mm blooms of special steel grades including cold-heading steels, spring steel, bearing steel, tyre wires and welding wires.
Concast will supply the core components, and together with consortium partners Posco E&C and PoscoN (two companies of the Posco group), will bear the overall responsibility for the technological concept.
The first cast is planned for December 31, 2007.
