Process / Converter Steelmaking SMS Demag Consortium to Supply X-Melt BOF Meltshop for Visakhapatnam Steel Plant

Jan. 22, 2008
Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP), India, has awarded an international consortium led by SMS Demag, Germany, a contract for the supply of an X-Melt BOF meltshop with an annual capacity to produce 2.8 million tonnes of liquid steel.

Supplies for the X-Melt BOF meltshop will comprise two 150-tonne BOF converters plus core components including a converter-gas recovery plant, change-over and export station, additives-supply system, oxygen lance system, bottom stirring equipment, and the company’s patented lamella suspension system. SMS Demag will also supply the converter gear unit with four frequency-controlled drive motors, which will be manufactured at SMS Demag's workshops in Hilchenbach, Germany. Also included in the supply will be the primary and secondary dedusting system.

Two X-Melt ladle furnaces will be installed as part of the project, as well as a 150-tonne RH-TOP vacuum degasser for the production of high-quality steel.

The complete BOF meltshop, including RH degasser and ladle furnaces, will be equipped with Level 2 process
control models. The scope of supply also includes the production planning system (Level 3).

Commissioning of the meltshop is scheduled for the end of 2009. Once complete, the expansion will help the facility to increase its annual production to 6.3 million tonnes.

SMS group is, under the holding SMS GmbH, a group of companies internationally active in plant construction and mechanical engineering for the steel and nonferrous metals industry. It consists of the two Business Areas SMS Demag and SMS Meer, which jointly form SMS metallurgy. In 2006, some 9,000 employees worldwide generated a turnover of about EUR 2.8 billion.
