CONVERTER STEELMAKING HEADLINES

Process / Converter Steelmaking Siemens Replaces LD Converters at CSN

Mar. 11, 2010
Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN) has placed an order with Siemens for the replacement of two LD converters at its Volta Redonda location. Turnkey delivery of the converters is planned during the summer of 2011 and at the end of 2012, respectively.

The city of Volta Redonda in the state of Rio de Janeiro is where CSN operates an integrated production complex with an annual capacity of 5.8 million tonnes of steel and steel products. The steelworks’ two 240-tonne LD converters A and C have nearly reached the end of their useful lives. Siemens renewed converter B in July 2006.

For the renewal of converters A and C, Siemens is supplying the vessels and trunnion rings as well as the maintenance-free VAI-Con Link suspension systems and bottom-stirring equipment. The scope of supply also includes the vessel temperature monitoring and cone cooling system with the related electrical and automation system. Siemens is also responsible for the basic and detailed engineering and commissioning.

The project will be implemented jointly by Siemens VAI Metals Technologies and Siemens Ltda. Brasil. Turnkey delivery of converter A is scheduled for August 2011, and converter C is due to be put into operation in December 2012.

Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional is Brazil’s second largest steel producer. The company offers a wide range of steel products, including slabs, hot and cold-rolled strip and also galvanized and tin plate. Its main customers are the domestic logistics, packaging, automotive, and domestic appliances industries as well as the building trade.

The Siemens Industry Sector (Germany) is a leading international supplier of environmentally friendly production, transportation, building and lighting technologies. With around 207,000 employees worldwide (September 30), Siemens Industry achieved in fiscal year 2009 total sales of approximately €35 billion.

The Siemens Industry Solutions Division (Germany), one of the world’s leading solution and service providers for industrial and infrastructure facilities, comprises the business activities of Siemens VAI Metals Technologies, Water Technologies and Industrial Technologies. With around 31,000 employees worldwide (September 30), Siemens Industry Solutions posted sales of €6.8 billion in fiscal year 2009.
