Industry Suppliers / Danieli Danieli Morgårdshammar to Supply Two Rolling Mills for SAIL ISP Facility

Feb. 7, 2008
Steel Authority of India, Ltd (SAIL) has contracted Danieli Morgårdshammar to supply two new rolling mill plants at its IISCO Steel Plant (ISP) in Burnpur, West Bengal. The two new mills will have a combined production capacity of 1,250,000 tonne/year of quality long products

The two mills—a 500,000-tonne/year high-speed wire rod mill and 750,000- tonne/year high-speed endless rolling mill—will incorporate the latest hot rolling technologies in bar and rod production to enhance ISP’s competitive position in the market. In addition to Danieli’s equipment supply, Danieli Automation is to provide electricals, automation, and process control systems for both rolling mills.

The high-speed wire rod mill will produce 5.5- to 22-mm diameter plain and 6-mm diameter deformed structural and engineering steel wire rod, in 2-tonne coils, at speeds of up to 115 meter/second and output rates of up to 150 tonne/hour. The mill is made up of a 16-SHS-stand roughing/intermediate train and loop control, followed by a 10-pass DWB pre-finishing block, and HSS-high-speed cropping shear. The line will also include a four-pass TMB-twin module high-speed finishing block with quick changing facilities, oil-film-bearing laying head, DSC wire rod on-line controlled cooling/heat treatment line, and Sund Birsta coil finishing facilities.

The high-speed endless rolling mill will be used to produce 8- to 40-mm diameter deformed bars, at speeds of up to 40 meter/second and output rates of up to 160 tonne/hour. The mill is arranged over a 16-SHS stand continuous mill plus two 6-pass, high-speed twist-free DWB finishing blocks, fed by twin-strand slit-rolled stock coming from the intermediate mill. A QTB system installed after the finishing stands will enable production of water-quenched and self-tempered rebars. Regular delivery of bar multiples at high speed onto cooling bed will be enabled by a Danieli Double Twin-Channel system that will ensure smooth bar loading, one-bar-per-notch, even with twin-strand finishing rolling operation.

The bar mill will be equipped with Danieli’s EWR® (Endless Welding Rolling) system, with continuous billet welding at the reheat furnace delivery side to assure uninterrupted production. This will be the first EWR unit to operate in India.

Startup for both plants is scheduled at the end of 2009.
