Pacific Steel Starts up Danieli QTR System
Jul. 1, 2006
July 2006 — Pacific Steel recently started up and commissioned a new Danieli QTR line for surface-quenching and self-tempering of ribbed wire rod at the company’s wire rod mill in New Zealand. The Final Acceptance Certificate was released 21 days after cold commissioning was started.
The new line has enabled production of 6- to 16-mm diameter high-yield strength wire rod with good weldability and ductility, starting from low carbon steel (Seismic®QT, a Fletcher Steel product) at speeds of up to 85 meters per second.
The reduction, or for some grades, the complete elimination of Vanadium as an alloying element will result in significant savings in production cost that will result in a short pay-back for the investment.
A corresponding QTB line for in-line processing of ribbed straight bars has successfully operated at Pacific Steel’s bar mill since October 2005. The QTR and QTB lines have enabled Fletcher Steel to expand its product range, adding the new SeismicQT to the SeismicMA microalloyed reinforcing steel product.
