Siemens Delivers Secondary Dedusting System for Severstal Converter
Feb. 22, 2012 Siemens VAI Metal Technologies received an order from Russian steel producer OAO Severstal to install a secondary dedusting system in the converter steelmaking plant at the Cherepovets production site. All future secondary emissions incurred during converter operation will be collected and treated. The new secondary dedusting system is scheduled to go into operation in mid 2015.
The new secondary dedusting system is part of an environmental program at Severstal, which intends to invest three billion rubles (roughly 75 million euros) in the dedusting plant. Severstal will carry out civil works and installation and set up the necessary auxiliary facilities. The dedusting plant will collect and clean the dust emitted during the charging of scrap and hot metal, limiting the dust load in off-gases through the stack to a maximum of 10 mg/Nm3.
Siemens delivered the core components of the secondary dedusting system, including a static off-gas cooler, a bag filter, and the induced-draft fans. Siemens is also responsible for the entire design, including electro-technical equipment and automation technologies. The patented heat absorption cooler developed by Siemens avoids high off-gas temperatures and protects filter bags from damage.
Severstal is the second steelmaker in Russia to have a secondary dedusting system installed by Siemens VAI in an existing steelworks.
The Cherepovets combine located in the Vologda Region forms part of the Severstal Russian Steel division of OAO Severstal. It produced a total of 11.1 million tonnes of steel in 2010. The converter steelmaking plant at the Cherepovets location is equipped with three 350-tonne converters. In 2010, the converter plant alone produced 9.3 million tonnes of steel. As a result, the dust emission levels are also very high, the company says.
