EPA Settles with Alro Steel for Chemical Inventory Reporting Violations
Apr. 19, 2010 - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 recently settled a case of hazardous chemical reporting violations involving Alro Steel Corp. The consent agreement and final order applies to Alro facilities in Lansing, Mich.; Melrose Park, Ill.; and Indianapolis and Fort Wayne, Ind.
EPA to Begin Full Investigation at Raritan Bay Slag Superfund Site
Apr. 8, 2010 - The U.S. EPA will begin a full investigation of the type and extent of contamination at the Raritan Bay Slag Superfund Site in Old Bridge and Sayreville, N.J., within a few weeks. The site was put on the federal Superfund list in November 2009 after sampling revealed elevated levels of lead in the jetty and seawall.
EU Hands out Excess Carbon Allowances in 2009
Apr. 2, 2010 - The recession led to emissions from industrial plants included in the EU's emissions trading system to drop by 11% in 2009, according to energy information provider ICIS Heren. The EU handed out more free carbon allowances than were actually needed for plants to comply with 2009 emissions.

Apr. 2, 2010 - The U.S. EPA and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation are investigating equipment failure at Tonawanda Coke that triggered an emergency flare this week to prevent the release of potentially harmful gas.
NLMK Launches Final Stage of Environmental Project
Mar. 18, 2010 - Novolipetsk Steel has begun the final stage of reconstructing the gas exhaust ducts at BOF Shop No.1 at its main production site in Lipetsk, the goal of which is to improve operational reliability and reduce the company’s environmental impact.

Ruukki Releases Report on 2009 Environmental Responsibility
Mar. 3, 2010 - Ruukki claims in its 2009 corporate environmental report that it made progress in the energy efficiency of production with the aim of achieving energy savings of 9%, compared to 2005 levels, by 2016. The company spent a total of EUR 21 million on environmental investments in 2009.
EPA Accepting Comments on ArcelorMittal Requests for Hazardous Waste Injection
Feb. 26, 2010 - U.S. EPA Region 5 is accepting public comments until April 7 on ArcelorMittal's requests to continue injecting hazardous waste deep underground at its Burns Harbor facility in Indiana. ArcelorMittal has three existing underground injection wells and plans to construct a fourth.
AISI Commends Letter by Senators to EPA
Feb. 24, 2010 - The American Iron and Steel Institute has expressed its support for a letter signed by eight U.S. Senators to EPA Administrator Lisa P. Corus Pilot Plant to Test CO2-Reducing Technology
