Environment and Sustainability SSAB to Install Emission Control System at Oxelösund Coke Plant

May 6, 2009
SSAB has announced the investment of approximately SEK 200 million in a Pushing Emission Control System at its coking plant in Oxelösund.

In the coking plant, coal is converted into coke and gas by heating it in a battery of sealed ovens.

Following its conversion, the coke is pushed from the battery’s ovens to a quenching car. During pushing, dust and smoke are released into the air.

SSAB’s new pushing emissions control system includes a new suction hood that accompanies the quenching car to the quenching tower. The new suction hood will allow SSAB to capture the smoke and dust that would otherwise be released during the push.

Captured smoke and dust is sent to a new filter, with the dust that is filtered in the filter plant eventually getting recirculated into the coking process.

The new emissions control system includes a suction hood and a filter plant that will help SSAB capture and process smoke and dust that is released when coke is pushed to the quenching car. The new system will result in a significant reduction in emissions and improvement of the environment for people living in the vicinity of the Oxelösund plant.

"It is important for us at SSAB that we are able in this way to continue our work for achieving an improved environment,” said Karl Gustav Ramström, Executive VP SSAB Plate. “We are constantly working to improve our production and develop products which bring with them environmental benefits for our customers and society".

SSAB initiated the investment in Pushing Emission Control System in connection with an application for an environmental permit in 2006. The investment is a prerequisite for SSAB fulfilling the terms of its environmental permit.

SSAB said that installation of the Pushing Emission Control System at the coking plant would begin immediately. The new system is expected to be finished toward the end of 2010.

SSAB is a world-leading supplier of high-strength steels, offering products developed in close cooperation with its customers. SSAB has 9200 employees in over 45 countries and production plants in Sweden and the United States.
