Environment Anti-Noise Screens Significantly Reduce Noise in Bartovice

Dec. 4, 2009
ArcelorMittal Ostrava has erected three anti-noise screens that separate the Bartovice marshalling yard from the residential zone. The company claims that the investment, which amounts to 4.5 million crowns, has helped to significantly reduce the noise in the area of the marshalling yard.

“Investments that reduce our environmental footprint in the nearby districts remain our priority,” said CEO Augustine Kochuparampil.

The three screens of 100, 150, and 28 meters have been erected in the area where trains are marshalled and transferred to the ArcelorMittal Ostrava railway siding. “Through this route we receive almost all raw materials, spare parts, and empty trains to load. As it is in the vicinity of a residential area, it is important for us to reduce the noise level here,” said CGO Petr Baranek.

Erection of the screens was completed in November by external company GEPA Zlín, which finished the project within one month. A second stage of noise-reduction actions, planned for 2010, will include the erection of a fourth screen.

ArcelorMittal Ostrava a.s., the largest steelmaker in the Czech Republic, is a part of the world’s leading steel group ArcelorMittal. Its yearly capacity is 3 million tonnes of steel. It exports approximately 50% of its output to more than 80 countries all over the world. The company has 5950 employees; the total number of employees including subsidiaries is nearly 7300. Its major shareholders are ArcelorMittal Holdings A. G. (82.548%) and Bonacova Ltd. (13.881%). In its 2008 fiscal year, the company generated a consolidated profit (after taxation) of CZK 6.077 billion.
