NLMK Launches New Environmental Project in Sinter Production
Dec. 15, 2009 Novolipetsk Steel (NLMK) has initiated a new environmental project at the sinter plant at its main production facility in Lipetsk as part of the company’s policy to control and reduce its environmental impact.
As part of the project, NLMK will revamp the central dedusting systems of its sinter machines and gas cleaning plants, generating an 80% reduction in sinter dust emissions. NLMK has concluded an agreement with Alstom Power for supply of the equipment, and delivery has already started.
While NLMK’s sinter plant’s specific emissions are the lowest in Russia, they exceeded 53% of NLMK’s total emissions in 2008. The advanced sintering process and the extra equipment for sintered layer treatment that will be implemented with this project will help to reduce this total, with the equipment for all four machines expected to reduce the sinter plant’s carbon monoxide emissions by 10%.
The company had previously introduced an automatic monitoring system for two sinter machines’ emissions that will enable it to evaluate the efficiency of its emission reduction activities. Next year NLMK will implement the same equipment at two more sinter machines.
