Environment and Sustainability Posco Launches Second Carbon-Neutral Program

Jul. 13, 2010
Posco recently launched the second “carbon-neutral program” at Seoul’s Posco Center as part of the steelmaker’s emissions reduction project.

The company notes that the program is a contest aimed at spreading social consciousness about climate change and practicing reductions of greenhouse gas emissions. During the program, participants volunteer to be involved in various projects for one year, selected from ideas submitted to the company.

Posco ran the contest for college students from May 10 to June 9 through Posco websites and another Internet site dedicated to the carbon neutral program.

At the contest, participating teams from local schools such as Handong University, KAIST, and Seoul Women’s University suggested new low-carbon projects including a rooftop farm built in tandem with local settlement houses for seniors and a smartphone application for promoting global tree-planting.

A group of judges selected 10 teams on June 24. The selected teams and local climate change experts were invited to the launching ceremony. Through an orientation session during the event, participating students were encouraged to pursue their no-carbon projects.

Each team of the program will be given support of up to 5 million won to help execute its assigned carbon-neutral mission for the next 12 months. Participant activities will be reported to the program headquarters on a monthly basis, and they will be shared in two meetings scheduled for October this year and March next year.
