Steel Producers / Gerdau Long Steel North America Gerdau Ameristeel’s Charlotte Mill Honored for Corporate Philanthropy

Nov. 30, 2007
The North Carolina Department of Commerce has selected Gerdau Ameristeel's Charlotte Steel Mill as its 7th Annual International Community and Economic Development Award (NCICEDA) winner in the medium company category.

North Carolina’s Department of Commerce presents this award annually to foreign-owned North Carolina companies that demonstrate noteworthy corporate philanthropy and volunteerism.

"Charlotte is a great community with many organizations that deserve our support," said Mike Mueller, Vice President, Mill Operations. "It is an honor to be a part of a company that is a good steward and therefore fortunate enough to contribute to the surrounding community."

Gerdau Ameristeel has maintained a strong presence in volunteer and charitable-giving efforts throughout its 46-year history in the Charlotte community. Notable efforts include Habitat for Humanity, Adopt-a-Highway, and post-Hurricane-Katrina support in New Orleans.

The Charlotte mill's history and impact on the local community were also key determining factors with this year's selection committee. Members of the NCICEDA selection team visited the mill to meet with employees, conduct interviews, and receive a mill tour. Gerdau Ameristeel was selected from a large pool of applicants representing a variety of industries and sizes. Selection criteria were divided into four key areas including:

  • Success and recognition of the business' community service programs
  • Executive leadership's commitment to community service
  • Corporate mission statement and values, as they relate to community service
  • Employee participation and service involvement in the local community

As a global, long-standing and recognized leader in the steel industry, Gerdau Ameristeel has been at the forefront of becoming an integral value-add in the communities it calls home. The company makes leadership, financial, and in-kind donations to a variety of organizations and efforts across the nation.

Gerdau Ameristeel is the second-largest minimill steel producer in North America with annual manufacturing capacity of approximately 12 million tons of mill finished steel products. Through its vertically integrated network of 19 minimills (including one 50% owned joint venture minimill), 19 scrap recycling facilities, and 62 downstream operations, Gerdau Ameristeel serves customers throughout North America. The company's products are generally sold to steel service centers, steel fabricators, or directly to original equipment manufacturers for use in a variety of industries.

Gerdau Ameristeel is 67% owned by Gerdau SA.
