Oct. 2006 — Danieli was recently contracted for the supply of a 550,000 tonnes/year minimill for UMMC-Ural Mining and Metallurgical Co. in Western Siberia, which will be the first complete greenfield minimill built in Russia in recent years. Danieli will supply the complex on a complete turnkey basis, including all auxiliary plants and services.
The new facility’s production cycle will range from scrap processing to steel melting, secondary refining, billet conticasting, hot rolling, on-line heat treatment and final off-line cold finishing of quality round bars.
For the meltshop, Danieli will supply a 70-tonne Danieli Centro Met “FastArc™” EAF, fitted with all latest technologies as well as a 70-tonne Ladle Furnace and twin-tank VD station. The EAF and LF will be served by an advanced plant for primary and secondary fume dedusting. A four-strand “FastCast™” high-speed conticaster, which will produce 130 to 180-mm square billets, will be directly connected to the reheat furnace for hot charging operation.
The Danieli Morgårdshammar super-flexible bar and section mill, fed by a 100-tonne/hour Danieli Centro Combustion walking hearth reheat furnace, will be made up of 18 SHS stands plus a five-pass Kocks-Danieli RSB block. On-line heat treatment facilities will include Low-Temperature Rolling system or QTB facilities to be used depending on the steel grade being rolled.
The mill will be equipped with the EWR® system that, through continuous billet welding, will enable endless rolling for uninterrupted production of bars and sections. This will be the first EWR unit to operate in Russia and in the whole of Eastern Europe.
The mill’s product range will include 10- to 42-mm diameter quality steel round bars, equivalent hexagons and squares, up to 40-mm diameter deformed bars, and 25- to 60-mm angles and corresponding channels, flats and tees. Product will comprise a wide variety of construction and special steel grades including bearing and stainless steels, mainly for automotive applications.
Danieli Centro Maskin will supply the billet conditioning line and bar cold processing facilities for such operations as quality bar inspection, conditioning and finishing. Danieli Automation will supply all electricals and an advanced level 1, 2 and 3 automation systems for the whole plant.
Plant startup is scheduled to take place by the end of 2008.
Danieli had previously carried out the complete reconstruction of UMMC’s Serov steelworks. An 80-tonne Danieli ladle furnace was put in operation in the middle of 2003, and a new 80-tonne Danarc EAF (as well as the associated FTP and WTP plants) started production in September this year. The Danieli VD/VOD station, which will start operation in mid 2007, will complete the Serov plant reconstruction.
