Industry Suppliers / More srl Tenaris Dalmine Improves EAF Operation with MORE Pneumatic Injection System

Apr. 6, 2009
Tenaris Dalmine, Italy, is reporting a number of benefits from one years’ operation of a pneumatic lime/dolomitic-lime injection system in their 100-tonne electric arc furnace.

The pneumatic injection system, which was supplied MORE srl, also of Italy, includes two 792-gallon (3000-L) MOLI dispensers for pneumatic injection of lime and dolomitic lime from the day-bins to the EAF shell. Two LIMEJET units are installed on board of the EAF shell, one dedicated for the lime and other for dolomitic lime pneumatic injection. The LIMEJET, a combined burner/fluxes injector with 5-MW burner mode, features MORE’s innovative MSF-Mixed Swirl Flame technology. MORE also supplied the detail engineering for manufacture of the storage silo and accessories.

The pneumatic lime/dolomitic lime injection system has demonstrated benefits in terms of continuous foaming slag conditioning, viscosity control by direct injection of fluxes into the slag/metal interface, and distribution during the melting and superheating phases.

Tenaris Dalmine has also recorded improved protection of the refractory side bank protection, and said the use of fine particles has resulted in a faster solution and improved material reactivity. The system manages the lime and dolo-lime melting process requirements via pneumatic transportation/injection technology, which has allowed the company to eliminate expensive maintenance for the conveyors belt transportation system from storage silos to EAF. From the environmental point of view, the technology eliminates the flux losses from the conveyors transportation system and consequently dust generation inside the meltshop building.

MORE currently has a scorecard of 25 EAFs worldwide with lime/dolo-lime pneumatic transportation/injection systems either in operation or under construction.

Tenaris is the leading global manufacturer and supplier of tubular products and services used in the drilling, completion and production of oil and gas; in process and power plants; and in specialized industrial and automotive applications with 21.500 employees world-wide and a total annual capacity of 6.000.000 tons.

Tenaris Dalmine, the steel pipe operations of Tenaris in Italy, is a leading Italian producer of seamless steel tubes for the energy, automotive and mechanical industries. Carbon and alloy steel product ranges in outside diameter from 11/16 to 28 inches (17.2 to 711 mm). The meltshop has an annual production capacity of 950.000 tonnes of finished products.
