Steel Producers / Nucor Steel Nucor CEO Wins AISC Robert P. Stupp Award

Jan. 30, 2012
Nucor Corp. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Daniel R. DiMicco, was announced as the recipient of the Robert P. Stupp Award for Leadership Excellence by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC).

"The award, presented on a selective basis by the AISC, gives special recognition to individuals who have provided unparalleled leadership in the steel construction industry. Dan is an exemplary leader in the steel construction industry and a strong advocate for domestic manufacturing jobs," said Roger E. Ferch, P.E., AISC’s President. "He served as an instrumental ambassador of producer support on the AISC Board of Directors and has championed technological advancements in steelmaking and environmental leadership in the industry."

DiMicco will be honored at AISC's 2012 North American Steel Construction Conference at the Gaylord Texan Convention Center in Dallas in April.

"I'm tremendously honored to be so recognized by AISC," DiMicco said. "Manufacturing continues to be the backbone of the middle class in this country, and that backbone is strengthened with American steel. I'm particularly honored to be the second representative of Nucor to be recognized by AISC."

In 1999 Ken Iverson, Nucor's former CEO, was also honored by AISC with the Robert P. Stupp Award.

DiMicco has served the steel industry for more than 35 years, starting in 1975 with Republic Steel Corp. in Cleveland where he began as a research metallurgist and project leader. He joined Nucor in 1982 as Plant Metallurgist and Manager of Quality Control for the Plymouth, Utah, facility. In 1991, he became General Manager of the Nucor-Yamato joint venture in Blytheville, Ark., and became Vice President in 1992. Seven years later he became Executive Vice President of Nucor, and in 2000 he was elected President and Chief Executive Officer. He was elected Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors in 2001 and Chairman of the Board in 2006.

DiMicco served on the AISC Board of Directors from 1999-2001. In 2008, he was appointed to the U.S. Manufacturing Council by then U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez and served on the board until 2011. Currently he serves on the Board of Directors for Duke Energy Corp., the American Iron and Steel Institute, and the World Steel Association where he has also been elected to the Executive Committee.

Nucor and affiliates are manufacturers of steel products, with operating facilities primarily in the U.S. and Canada. Products produced include carbon and alloy steel in bars, beams, sheet and plate; steel joists and joist girders; steel deck; fabricated concrete reinforcing steel; cold finished steel; steel fasteners; metal building systems; steel grating and expanded metal; and wire and wire mesh.
