Safety Tata Steel Launches Safety Mascot

Dec. 22, 2009
Tata Steel aims to produce “injury-free steel” with help from its new safety mascot Jeevan, which has been conceptualized based on suggestions from its employees.

The mascot is a “human-like creation” adorned with Personal Protective Equipment such as goggles, helmet, safety shoes, and jacket—mandatory gear before entering the Steel Works. The company hopes that the mascot serves as a reminder to ensure safety at all levels of work in the organization.

Since 2004, Tata Steel says that stepping up safety measures for its employees has been a constant goal. The company would like to bring down its Loss Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) to 0.4 from the present 1.7 in its “Goals 2012.”

The goal of injury-free steel entails that none of its employees be injured in the process of steelmaking, from start (raw materials) to the finished product in both Long and Flat Products segments.

“Tata Steel has made its presence felt in the global circuit, several times over, through its remarkable achievements in different spheres of activity. We should now strive to become a leader in safe practices at work,” H M Nerurkar, MD, Tata Steel, said at an event introducing the mascot.

“To begin with, Tata Steel has been recognized internationally by worldsteel recently for demonstrating excellence in safety and health programs,” Nerurkar continued. “Producing ‘injury-free steel’ is not an impossible task if we are all aware of our responsibilities of ensuring safety in all our work spheres. I am certain that as a safety-aware organization, we shall soon be producing steel which has our employees’ hard labor and not their pain.”
