SIEMAG TRANSPLAN HEADLINES

Industry Suppliers / Siemag Transplan Siemag to Supply Automated Coil System for Qinghai Ping An Aluminum

Dec. 24, 2008
Qinghai Ping An Aluminum High Precision Machining Industrial Co., Ltd., China, has placed an order with Siemag for the supply of a new coil conveying and storage system.

Ping An is currently constructing a new 240,000 tonnes/year aluminum flat-material production plant at its site in Xining (Qinghai province) in western China. Coils from the new hot strip mill (supplied by SMS Demag AG) will be transported to a manually operated flat store with 300 storage locations for cooling. A special pallet conveying system will then take cooled coils to one of two cold rolling mills.

Between the various production operations, the coils will be temporarily stored in a two-aisle high-bay store with 700 storage bays. The high-bay store is also used to transport coils that have been rolled to the schedule finishing line.

The entire flow of material from the hot rolling mill to the processing lines is monitored by the Siemag warehouse management system.

After supplying the world's largest high-bay store—containing 4300 storage bays—to a German customer in the early 1990s, with this order, Siemag will now also hold the record for supplying the high-bay store located at the highest altitude in the world. Located in the Tibetan mountains in western China, Xining’s elevation is 2200 meters above sea level.

The new system is expected to go into production in mid-2009.

Siemag GmbH, a company of the SMS group, supplies logistics systems for hot and cold rolling mills processing steel and nonferrous metals. It also specializes in packaging lines for coils and sheet/plate pack as well as high-pressure grinding systems for blooms, billets and slabs.

SMS group is, under the holding SMS GmbH, a group of companies internationally active in plant construction and mechanical engineering for the steel and nonferrous metals industry. It consists of the two Business Areas SMS Demag and SMS Meer, which jointly form SMS metallurgy. In 2007, some 8000 employees worldwide generated a turnover of about EUR 3.0 billion.
