Aug. 2006 — The Siemens Group Industrial Solutions and Services (I&S) received a contract from the Russian steel producer Nizhnie Sergi Metalware-Metallurgical Plant (NSMMZ) for the supply of plant components for a new steel mill in Berezovsky, Swerdlovsk. The contract is valued at EUR 44 million.
NSMMZ produces wire rod, bars and angles for use in the construction industry. The company is building a new Berezovsky/Swerdlovsk mill in order to expand their production output and product range. The new facility will produce small steel components (e.g., screws, nails) in addition to tire cord.
Siemens’ scope of supply comprises a 120-tonne Ultimate-type electric arc furnace to be supplied by VAI Fuchs and an 8-strand billet caster to be supplied by VAI Pomini. The Ultimate EAF is a new generation of VAI Fuchs electric arc furnace that enables higher furnace output, higher steel quality, and tap-to-tap times as low as 30 minutes. The scope also includes the corresponding dedusting facilities, electrics and automation.
Following start-up, which is scheduled for the end of 2007, the steel mill will be capable of producing a total of 1.5 million tonnes of small steel components per year, including tire cord.
