Industry Suppliers / Siemens Siemens VAI to Expand Range of Kaluzhsky Steel Billet Caster

Mar. 26, 2010
Kaluzhsky Scientific Industrial Electrometallurgical Plant (Kaluzhsky Steel) has placed an order with Siemens VAI Metals Technologies to supply equipment for an additional casting format for the continuous billet casting machine currently under construction in the company's compact steelworks in Vorsino.

With the additional equipment, the steelworks’ 8-strand continuous billet caster — originally designed for the production of 125x125 mm cross-section billets — will be capable of casting billets with a cross-section of 150x150 millimeters. Siemens’ scope of supply includes Diamold casting mould, spray registers and dummy bar components.

Siemens had been contracted in late 2008 to erect the complete steelworks, which is scheduled to start operating in 2011. The original scope of supply included an Ultimate electric arc furnace, secondary metallurgical equipment, dedusting equipment, continuous billet casting machine, and media supply equipment plus the electrical equipment and automation system. The new plant will produce 1.5 million tonnes of liquid steel per year as carbon and alloy steel that will be cast and rolled as billets.

Kaluzhsky Steel belongs to the Maxi Group, a majority shareholding of the Russian company Novolipetsk Steel.

The Siemens Industry Sector (Germany) is a leading international supplier of environmentally friendly production, transportation, building and lighting technologies. With around 207,000 employees worldwide (September 30), Siemens Industry achieved in fiscal year 2009 total sales of approximately €35 billion.
