Industry Suppliers / Siemens Siemens to Supply Equipment for Atoun Steel Long Products Minimill

Nov. 1, 2006

Nov. 2006 — Siemens VAI Metals Technologies, Linz, Austria, recently received an order from Atoun Steel Industry Co. (ASi) for the supply and installation of all process equipment for a new minimill to be built at Yanbu, Saudi Arabia.

Founded by a group of Saudi Arabian investors in response to continued demand for rebars by the Saudi Arabian construction industry, Atoun Steel will produce high-quality billets and rebars at its new facility in Yanbu Industrial City II.

Installation of a plant to supply direct-reduced iron (DRI) to the steel mill is foreseen in a second project stage; in the interim, the plant will utilize scrap and iron ore purchased from international markets.

Siemens VAI will supply all process equipment from the scrap yard to the rolling mill, including an 80/100-tonne Ultimate-type electric arc furnace (EAF), five-strand billet caster equipped with Diamold high-speed casting and Dynaflex oscillation technology, and a long-product rolling milling outfitted with high-performance red ring rolling-mill stands. The EAF will be capable of operation with hot DRI charging in the future. Siemens VAI will also be responsible for the engineering, installation, start-up and commissioning of the new minimill.

Following a two-year construction period, the plant will be capable of producing close to one million tonnes of liquid steel and half a million tonnes of reinforcement bars and rounds per year for the booming local construction industry. The order volume amounts to more than EUR 100 million.

Metals Technologies (MT), a division of the Siemens Group Industrial Solutions and Services (I&S), is one of the world's leading engineering and plant-building companies for the iron and steel industry as well as for the flat-rolling sector of the aluminum industry and for open-cast mining.
