Steel Imports Stainless, Specialty Imports Nearly Steady Through October

Total stainless steel imports reached 650,517 tons through the first ten months of 2008, a 1.4% decrease compared to YTD October 2007, according to the latest report from the Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA).
 
Total specialty imports (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) reached 833,209 tons in the same period, a 0.1% decrease compared to YTD October 2007.
 
Data included in the SSINA report reflects U.S. consumption, imports, and import penetration for YTD October 2008 compared to the same 2007 ten-month period for major specialty steel product lines, as well as for total stainless steel and total specialty steel.
 
Stainless steel sheet/strip YTD October 2008 imports were 400,047 tons, an 11.1% increase compared to YTD October 2007. U.S. consumption was 1,128,758 tons through the same period, an 11.1% decrease, while ten-month import penetration was 35.4%, a 7.1 percentage point increase from 2007.
 
Stainless steel plate YTD October 2008 imports were 82,648 tons, a 36.4% decrease compared to YTD October 2007. U.S. consumption was 207,829 tons through the same period, a 30.4% decrease, while ten-month import penetration was 39.8%, a 3.7 percentage point decrease from 2007.
 
Stainless steel bar YTD October 2008 imports were 104,545 tons, a 0.6% increase compared to YTD October 2007. U.S. consumption was 200,984 tons through the same period, a 3.9% increase, while ten-month import penetration was 52.0%, a 1.7 percentage point decrease from 2007.
 
Stainless steel rod YTD October 2008 imports were 26,222 tons, a 1.2% decrease compared to YTD October 2007. U.S. consumption was 54,344 tons through the same period, a 1.4% increase, while ten-month import penetration was 48.3%, a 1.2 percentage point decrease from 2007.
 
Stainless steel wire YTD October 2008 imports were 37,054 tons, a 5.8% decrease compared to YTD October 2007. U.S. consumption was 63,199 tons through the same period, a 4.6% decrease, while ten-month import penetration was 58.6%, a 0.8 percentage point decrease from 2007.
 
Through YTD October 2008, total stainless steel imports (comprising the foregoing product lines) were 650,517 tons, a 1.4% decrease compared to YTD October 2007. U.S. consumption was 1,655,113 tons through the same period, a 12.0% decrease, while ten-month import penetration was 39.3%, a 4.2 percentage point increase from 2007.
 
Alloy tool steel YTD October 2008 imports were 83,014 tons, a 1.4% increase compared to YTD October 2007. U.S. consumption and import penetration through the period were not calculable.
 
Electrical steel YTD October 2008 imports were 99,678 tons, a 7.7% increase compared to YTD October 2007. U.S. consumption was 297,791 tons through the same period, an 18.1% decrease from October 2007, while ten-month import penetration was 33.5%, an 8.0 percentage point increase from 2007.
 
Through YTD October 2008, total specialty steel imports (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) were 833,209 tons, a 0.1% decrease compared to YTD October 2007. U.S. consumption was 2,019,218 tons through the same period, a 12.7% decrease, while ten-month import penetration was 41.3%, a 5.2 percentage point increase from 2007.
