Total stainless imports reached 206,931 tons through July 2009, a 57.1% decrease compared to YTD July 2008 according to the latest report from the Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA).
Total specialty imports (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) reached 275,032 tons through the same period, a 55.2% decrease compared to YTD July 2008
Data included in the SSINA report reflect U.S. consumption, imports, and import penetration for YTD July
2009 compared to the same 2008 seven-month period for major specialty steel product lines, as well as for total stainless steel and total specialty steel.
Stainless steel sheet/strip YTD July 2009 imports were 114,434 tons, a 62.0% decrease compared to YTD July 2008. U.S. consumption was 497,051 tons over the same period, a 41.3% decrease, while seven-month import penetration was 23.0%, a 12.6 percentage point decrease from 2008.
Stainless steel plate YTD July 2009 imports were 21,737 tons, a 64.4% decrease compared to YTD July 2008. U.S. consumption was 97,502 tons over the same period, a 36.9% decrease, while seven-month import penetration was 22.3%, a 17.2 percentage point decrease from 2008.
Stainless steel bar YTD July 2009 imports were 46,462 tons, a 38.3% decrease compared to YTD July 2008. U.S. consumption was 89,159 tons over the same period, a 38.6% decrease, while seven-month import penetration was 52.1%, a 0.3 percentage point increase from 2008.
Stainless steel rod YTD July 2009 imports were 7,136 tons, a 62.9% decrease compared to YTD July 2008. U.S. consumption was 17,369 tons over the same period, a 55.0% decrease, while seven-month import penetration was 41.1%, a 8.7 percentage point decrease from 2008.
Stainless steel wire YTD July 2009 imports were 17,163 tons, a 33.6% decrease compared to YTD July 2008. U.S. consumption was 22,858 tons over the same period, a 46.4% decrease, while seven-month import penetration was 75.1%, a 14.5 percentage point increase from 2008.
Through YTD July 2009, imports of total stainless steel (comprising the foregoing product lines) were
206,931 tons, a 57.1% decrease compared to YTD July 2008. U.S. consumption was 723,939 tons over the same period, a 41.0% decrease, while seven-month import penetration was 28.6%, a 10.7 percentage point decrease from 2008.
Alloy tool steel YTD July 2009 imports were 22,473 tons, a 64.4% decrease compared to YTD July 2008. U.S. consumption and import penetration were not calculable.
Electrical steel YTD July 2009 imports were 45,628 tons, a 33.0% decrease compared to YTD July 2008. U.S. consumption was 131,296 tons over the same period, a 37.3% decrease from YTD July 2008, while seven month import penetration was 34.8%, a 2.3 percentage point increase from 2008.
Through YTD July 2009, imports of total specialty steel (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) were 275,032 tons, a 55.2% decrease compared to YTD July 2008. U.S. consumption was 870,246 tons through the same period, a 41.5% decrease, while seven-month import penetration was 31.6%, a 9.6 percentage point decrease from 2008.
