Steel Producers / Steel Processors Cargill and Robinson Steel Finalize Joint Venture

Oct. 19, 2007
Global iron and steel trader, processor and distributor Cargill has joined with RPS® manufacturer and distributor Robinson Steel to form a new venture named Cargill Robinson, LLC. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We are pleased that we can bring together two organizations to create a new, completely global supply chain,” said Mike Taylor, President of Cargill’s Steel Service Centers, and Paul Labriola, President and CEO of Robinson Steel, in a joint statement. “Our resources and capabilities are unique in the marketplace.”

The new venture will have a 200,000 tons/year capacity of panel-flat, cut-to-length, hot-rolled steel from a jointly owned 100,000-square-foot production facility located in Granite City, Ill.  Cargill is a licensed distributor of RPS® Sheet and Plate and will have access to production from Robinson's other Granite City and East Chicago, Ind. processing lines.

Headquartered in East Chicago, Robinson Steel operates cold reduction lines as well as seven RPS Laser Production and Distribution centers, providing precision-cut parts to OEMs and fabricators. Locations include Pomona, Mo.; Davenport, Iowa; Arlington, Texas; Statesville, N.C.; Opelika, Ala; East Chicago; and Granite City, Ill.

In April 2007, Cargill acquired the assets of Loudon, Tenn., based Olympic Metals, which offers stretch-leveled, cut-to-length sheets, blanking and coil-slitting capabilities. Cargill currently operates seven flat-rolled steel service centers with over 245 employees, focusing on hot-rolled band, pickled and oiled, cold-rolled and tin mill products. Locations include East Chicago, Ind.; Houston, Texas; Tulsa, Okla.; Panama City, Fla.; Loudon, Memphis and Nashville, Tenn.

Cargill is an international provider of food, agricultural and risk management products and services.  With 158,000 employees in 66 countries, the company is committed to using its knowledge and experience to collaborate with customers to help them succeed.

Robinson Steel Co., Inc. is an innovative manufacturer and distributor of RPS Laser Cut Parts and RPS Sheet and Plate from 10 locations through out North America.
