The mills, faced with weak fourth quarter order books, started seasonal maintenance shutdowns in November that have continued through this month. With high customer inventories, mill transaction prices continue to slip. MEPS has received unconfirmed reports that surcharges are not being universally applied, especially to large volume purchasers. Steel market conditions are expected to improve in the first quarter, and AK Steel Corp. has already announced a $US50 per ton hike. Canadian market activity continues to be subdued, with inventory levels apparently more tailored to present-day demand than those in the US. In a proposed consent decree lodged in federal court, AK Steel has agreed to a $1.2 million settlement consisting of a $300,000 penalty and $900,000 in projects that will reduce smog-producing ozone in Pennsylvania.

AK Steel Awards Supplier of the Year Honors
Nov. 19, 2004 - AK Steel has honored three of its suppliers for outstanding service, value and strategic support of the steelmaker's business plan. The awards, the first ever presented by AK Steel, were announced during a meeting in Middletown of representatives of the steelmaker's largest 100 suppliers, based on commodity value and services provided. The suppliers attending represented approximately $2.25 billion in goods and services purchased annually by AK Steel.
AK Steel Announces Surcharges and Surcharge Modifications
Nov. 16, 2004 - AK Steel has advised its flat-rolled carbon steel customers that a $153 per ton surcharge will be added to invoices for products shipped in December, an increase of $4 from November's surcharge of $149 per ton. AK Steel also advised its electrical steel customers that a $260 per ton surcharge will be added to invoices for electrical steel products shipped in December, up $10 from the November surcharge of $250 per ton for those products.

Oct. 20, 2004 - AK Steel has advised its flat-rolled carbon steel customers that a $149 per ton surcharge will be added to invoices for products shipped in November, a decrease of $8 from October's surcharge of $157 per ton. The company also advised its electrical steel customers that a $250 per ton surcharge will be added to invoices for electrical steel products shipped in November, down $45 from the October surcharge of $295 per ton for those products.

AK Steel Coke Plant to Receive 4th Consecutive Safety Award
Mar. 26, 2004 - AK Steel’s Middletown, Ohio, coke plant has again been selected to receive the Max Eward Safety Award from the American Coke and Coal Chemicals Institute (ACCCI). The award recognizes the ACCCI-member coke plant with the best safety record during 2003. Employees at the Middletown coke plant have worked for four years in a row with a record of zero lost-time injuries.
