Year-to-Date Steel Import Totals Continue to Rise Apr. 1, 2005 - The United States imported a total of 2,361,000 net tons of steel in February according to the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). Coalition Announces Grand Calumet and Indiana Harbor Settlement Aug. 23, 2004 - U. S. Steel, part of a coalition of eight companies, announced last week an historic agreement regarding plans for environmental restoration of the East Branch of the Grand Calumet River and the Indiana Harbor Canal System. The agreement, which should expedite work on the area's natural resources and habitats, settles a natural resources damages claim brought by the state of Indiana and two federal agencies against companies whose operations had allegedly had an adverse effect on the area's environment. The settlement involves eight of the companies.

U. S. Steel Withdraws Case against Miller Citizens Aug. 9, 2004 - United States Steel Corp. has withdrawn its request to be compensated by the Miller Citizens Corp. (MCC) for legal fees incurred defending against a filing by the MCC to oppose the proposed tax settlement between the company, Lake County and the state of Indiana. The Indiana Tax Court recently held that MCC had no right to intervene and that the MCC motion was not timely filed.

Settlement Reached in U.S. Steel Kosice Production Cap Dispute Mar. 20, 2004 - United States Steel Corp. confirmed an announcement by Slovak Prime Minister Mikulas Dzurinda and EU Commissioner for Enlargement Guenter Verheugen that an agreement had been reached resolving a dispute regarding the effective date of limitations upon the production of flat-rolled products at U. S. Steel's Kosice, Slovakia, subsidiary.

USS Reports on Pension Fund Contribution and Other Business Matters Jan. 2, 2004 - United States Steel Corp. announced that in late December it completed the voluntary contribution of timber cutting rights, which were valued at $59 million by an independent appraisal, to its defined benefit pension plan. As a result, the company will record a pre-tax gain of approximately $55 million in the fourth quarter of 2003 to reflect the excess of the fair value of the contributed assets over their net book value. In addition, U. S. Steel voluntarily contributed $16 million in cash to its defined benefit pension plan, bringing total 2003 contributions to $75 million.
