Steel Producers / Sterling Steel Sterling Steel to Install Moré Lime System at EAF

Mar. 22, 2007

March 22, 2007 — Sterling Steel recently placed an order with Moré srl, Italy, for the supply of a complete pneumatic lime transportation/injection system for their 400-ton electric arc furnace.

The project comprises the supply of two 1320-gallon (5000-liter) MOLI dispensers and two innovative LIMEJET multi-functional Mixed Swirled Flame burner/injection units, plus electrical/automation system automation, pipelines, and lime storage silos engineering.

The MOLI dispensers will provide pneumatic transportation of Dololime and HiCal from the main storage silos to the EAFs injectors. Installed on board the EAF upper shell, one of the LIMEJET burner/injection units will be dedicated for pneumatic injection of the Dololime and one will be used for the pneumatic injection of HiCal.

MOLI and LIMEJET technology are valid and provide a well-proven process improvement compared to existing practices of charging the fluxes into the bucket with super-sack. The new technology will provide a much cleaner shop environment and it will avoid big- bags management.

Pneumatic injection of the HiCal/Dololime fluxes directly into the slag favors refractory-side bank protection. More importantly, pneumatic injection facilitates continuous slag foaming and viscosity control. Recovery is also increased because the fine particles enter the solution and react much more quickly.

Start-up of the equipment is scheduled for August 2007.

Moré srl now has a scorecard of 17 EAFs with lime/dololime pneumatic transportation / injection systems worldwide.
