Industry Suppliers / Tippins New General Managers Named at Three U. S. Steel Facilities

Aug. 24, 2004

United States Steel Corp. announced changes in the leadership at Gary Works, Mon Valley Works and Fairfield Works. The new appointments are effective September 1, concurrent with the promotion of George F. Babcoke, General Manager of Gary Works, to Managing Director of Engineering and Research.

Raymond R. Terza, current General Manager of Mon Valley Works, will become General Manager of Gary Works.

Mark Whalen, current General Manager at Fairfield Works, will become General Manager of Mon Valley Works.

Robert Cary, Plant Manager of Finishing Operations at Fairfield Works, has been promoted to General Manager of Fairfield Works.

The new appointments are effective September 1, concurrent with the promotion of George F. Babcoke, General Manager of Gary Works, to Managing Director of Engineering and Research.

Raymond R. Terza, current General Manager of Mon Valley Works, will become General Manager of Gary Works. He joined U. S. Steel in 1973 as a turn foreman in the machine shop of the company's former National-Duquesne Works. He advanced through a number of supervisory positions at National-Duquesne, Homestead Works, Irvin Works and Clairton Works before he was named Division Manager of Iron and Steel Production at Mon Valley Works in 1992. In 1996, Terza was promoted to Plant Manager of Coke Operations at Gary Works, and in 1997, he became Plant Manager of Primary Operations. He was promoted to General Manager of Clairton Works in 2001, and to General Manager of Mon Valley Works in 2003.

Terza holds a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and a master's degree in business administration from Duquesne University.

"Ray has served in a number of management capacities, with direct oversight of primary and finishing steel operations, and cokemaking operations," said John H. Goodish, Executive Vice President—Operations. "His ability to manage all aspects of the operations makes him a perfect fit for managing Gary Works, our largest plant."

Mark Whalen, current General Manager at Fairfield Works, will become General Manager of Mon Valley Works. He joined U. S. Steel in 2000 and managed operations at U. S. Steel Kosice and in Smederevo, Serbia, before he was named General Manager of Fairfield Works. Prior to his career at U. S. Steel, he served in several research and operations positions with AK Steel Corp. and Tippins, Inc.

Mark holds a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and master of science and doctor of philosophy degrees in mechanical engineering from Pennsylvania State University.

"Mark joined us as we launched our Kosice operations in Slovakia, and later our operations in Serbia," said Goodish. "His contributions helped ensure a seamless transition in plant operations."

Robert Cary, Plant Manager of Finishing Operations at Fairfield Works, has been promoted to General Manager at that location. He joined U. S. Steel in 1964 as a practice engineer at Fairfield Works. Throughout his career, Cary progressed through managerial positions at Fairfield Works involving different areas of steelmaking including processing, customer relations, and sheet and tin products. He was named Plant Manager of Finishing Operations in 1999, a position he has held until his promotion to General Manager of Fairfield Works.

Cary earned a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from the University of Arkansas.

"Bob has demonstrated leadership skills and extensive knowledge of plant operations," said Goodish. "He is an excellent choice to assume the leadership of Fairfield Works."
