Steel Producers / U.S. Steel U. S. Steel Names General Manager for Great Lakes Works

Feb. 29, 2008
As part of a wave of personnel moves across the United States Steel Corp. organization, the company has appointed David J. Rintoul as General Manager of Great Lakes Works in Ecorse and River Rouge, Mich.

Rintoul replaces Frederick G. Jauss, who has been named General Manager of Gary Works. Rintoul will report to Anthony R. Bridge, Vice President—Operations, East. The change is effective March 1.

In his new position, Rintoul, 50, will be responsible for day-to-day operations at U. S. Steel's second-largest integrated operation in the United States, which has an annual raw steelmaking capability of 3.8 million net tons.

Rintoul had acquired nearly 30 years of steel industry experience by the time he joined U. S. Steel in July 2007 as General Manager—Granite City Works in Granite City, Ill. He began his steelmaking career in 1979 at Algoma Steel’s plate and strip rolling and finishing operations, and advanced through a series of increasingly responsible assignments, including the position of Superintendent. In 1993, he joined the former Rouge Steel in Dearborn, Mich., as Superintendent—Cold Mill.

Rintoul moved to the former Acme Steel in Riverdale, Ill., in 1995 as Manager—Hot Strip Mill, which was part of the company's Compact Strip Plant. He was appointed General Manager of the Compact Strip Plant (1997), and was later appointed General Manager—Steel Manufacturing (1999), a position he held until he was named Vice President—Operations at North Star BlueScope Steel in 2001. In 2005, he became Vice President—Operations at BlueScope's Butler Manufacturing Co. in Kansas City, Mo., a position he held until he joined U. S. Steel.

Rintoul earned an associate's degree in mechanical engineering technology from Sault College of Applied Arts and Technology in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., in 1979. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in business administration from Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., in 1983 and received a master's degree in business administration from the University of Notre Dame in 2006.
