Steel Producers / U.S. Steel U. S. Steel Names General Manager for Granite City Works

April 27, 2006 — United States Steel Corp. announced that Michael A. Fedorenko has been appointed General Manager of Granite City Works, U. S. Steel's integrated steelmaking operation near St. Louis. Fedorenko succeeds Merle Stein who recently was named General Manager of Fairfield Works. The appointment is effective May 1.

"Mike recently completed a challenging assignment as General Director of U. S. Steel Serbia, during which he oversaw the rebuild and restart of the No. 1 blast furnace and the doubling of U. S. Steel Serbia's steelmaking capability," said U. S. Steel Chairman and CEO John Surma. "We expect him to capitalize on this important experience in his new position at Granite City Works to keep it among the leaders in our increasingly challenging industry."

Fedorenko, 51, graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1976 with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and began his career with U. S. Steel that same year. He advanced through a series of engineering positions at operations in Pennsylvania and Ohio, and in 1986, he moved into the purchasing department at the company's headquarters in Pittsburgh. In 1988, he was promoted to Manager—Purchasing at Fairless Works near Philadelphia.

Fedorenko was transferred to Fairfield Works in Alabama in 1990, where he was named Manager of Engineering. In 1996, he was named Senior Area Manager of Sheet Products, and in 1998, he was named Division Manager of Utilities, Shops and Services. He returned to Pittsburgh in 2000, when he was named Plant Manager of the Mon Valley Works’ Irvin Plant.

In September 2003, Fedorenko was named Vice President—Technology at U. S. Steel Kosice (USSK), U. S. Steel's steelmaking operation in the Slovak Republic, and in March 2005 was appointed to his most recent position as Vice President & General Director—U. S. Steel Serbia, d.o.o and affiliated companies.
