SAIL Commissions New Tension Leveling Line at Salem Steel Plant
Aug. 10, 2010 Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) celebrated this week the commissioning of a new 70,000 tonnes per annum tension leveling line at the company’s Salem Steel Plant. The new line was commissioned by SAIL Chairman C.S. Verma.
Supplied by Redex, France, the new tension leveling line is a value-added process that imparts a combination of tensions and flexions under controlled elongation. The new line will help the Salem plant achieve enhanced flatness in stainless steel strip and coils through the creation of homogenous lengths of internal fibers, practically removing internal strip tensions. Flatness achievable is 3i units.
The line was installed at a cost of Rs. 39.4 crore as part of the Salem Plant’s modernization and expansion plan.
Commissioning of the new line was coordinated with Verma’s maiden visit to the Salem Plant for an appraisal of the facilities that will be impacted by the plant’s modernization and expansion plan. He was accompanied on this visit by B.B. Singh, SAIL Director (Personnel). During his visit, Verma congratulated the plant personnel on the timely completion of the modernization and expansion activities.
The major new facilities coming online at the Salem Plant include an electric arc furnace, ladle furnace, AOD convertor, slab caster and a new Sendzimir mill. The company said the new facilities will help to add 0.18 million tonnes of high-value stainless/alloy steel products to SAIL’s annual product mix.
