World NLMK Recognized as one of Russia’s Most Innovative Companies

Aug. 13, 2010
Novolipetsk Steel (NLMK) is celebrating the designation of several of its projects as some of fifty most innovative projects undertaken by major Russian enterprises. The projects were selected during the course of research conducted by Mediaholding Expert. NLMK was also selected as one of the most innovative Russian companies.

One of the projects presented by NLMK was the company’s creation of Russia’s first laser treatment facility, which the company uses to produce electrical steels at a new quality level.  The new process facilitates an 8-10% reduction of specific magnetic losses in finished grain-oriented steels.

Another project presented by NLMK was the development of a unique process for producing galvanized steel sheets with thicknesses from 0.22 up to 4.0 mm, which are in high demand in the construction and white goods sectors. The company became the first Russian company to produce hot-dip galvanized strip with thicknesses from 2.5 to 4.0 mm for the construction sector when it constructed its Hot-Dip Galvanizing Line No. 3, NLMK. With the commissioning of Continuous Hot-Dip Galvanizing Line No. 4, NLMK mastered a new product for the Russian market – galvanized sheet with thickness up to 0.22 mm.

NLMK also designed a new technique for steel treatment during oxygen blowing in a Basic Oxygen Furnace vessel that allows the production of high-quality steel grades. The complex process enables steel nitration during oxygen blowing in the BOF for the production of new steel grades, including those used for high-quality automotive sheet production.

Mediaholding Expert embarked on its research project in order to identify key Russian producers with hands-on experience in implementing innovations. Based on the research, the media group developed a list of innovative projects implemented within the last 5 years; the list includes 33 major Russian companies.
