SMS Concast Commissions Eight-Strand Billet Caster at JSW

Jun. 26, 2009
JSW Steel Ltd. and SMS Concast have together commissioned the first eight-strand billet caster on the Indian subcontinent. The new caster is located in Toranagallu in the state of Karnataka in India.

Supplied by SMS Concast, the new caster is designed for an annual production capacity of 1.7 million tonnes of billets, and is capable of both open and submerged casting. It is directly tuned to the downstream wire rod and rebar rolling mills using hot discharging technology.

The new high-speed caster features convex mold technology, electromagnetic mold stirring, and hydraulic mold oscillation. SMS Concast also delivered the full automation software, including Level-2 CONTROLWARE, which is linked to the Level-3 system of the plant.

The new billet caster is part of JSW's "Cheetah" expansion program, which is to expand the Vijayanagar works’ annual production capacity to 7 million tonnes. The partners credit the close and highly purposeful cooperation between the two companies for the successful conclusion of the project.

SMS Concast, Switzerland, is a company of the SMS group, Germany.

SMS group is, under the holding SMS GmbH, a group of companies internationally active in plant construction and mechanical engineering for the steel and nonferrous metals industry. It consists of the two Business Areas SMS Siemag and SMS Meer, which jointly form SMS metallurgy. In 2008, some 8900 employees worldwide generated a turnover of more than EUR 3.6 billion.
