SMS Siemag to Modernize Thick Slab Caster for Dillinger Hütte

Jul. 2, 2009
Dillinger Hütte has placed an order with SMS Siemag to modernize its thick slab caster No. 5 at Steelplant Dillingen.

The vertical-type continuous caster at Dillinger Hütte produces the world's thickest slabs, in the sizes ranging from 230 to 400 mm in gage and 1400 to 2200 mm in width. The original caster was supplied by SMS Siemag in 1998.

SMS Siemag’s supply scope for the upgrade comprises reinforcement of the withdrawal and straightening units as well as the supply of various spare parts. The deal also includes provision of the X-Pact® electrical and automation package, for which SMS Siemag will supply the planning, production, programming of the electrical equipment and its complete installation, commissioning, and trial operation as well as training.

As part of the upgrade, SMS Siemag will renew the automatic control equipment for hydraulic resonance oscillation of the mold, hydraulic segment adjustment, hydraulic bending unit adjustment, hydraulic adjustment system for the withdrawal and straightening units, and load compensation control for the strand drive group. Continuous Caster No. 5’s functional sequences are to be retained.

The work itself and the commissioning are scheduled to take place in 2010.

SMS group is, under the holding SMS GmbH, a group of companies internationally active in plant construction and mechanical engineering for the steel and nonferrous metals industry. It comprises the two Business Areas SMS Siemag and SMS Meer, which jointly form SMS metallurgy. In 2008, some 8900 employees worldwide generated a turnover of more than EUR 3.6 bn.
