AIST Presents 2010 Energy Achievement Award

Feb. 3, 2010
The AIST Energy and Utilities Technology Committee (EUTC) presented the 2010 Energy Achievement Award to Michael T. Lantz of ArcelorMittal Shelby at the AIST Northeastern Ohio Member Chapter meeting on January 19.

The EUTC established the AIST Energy Achievement Award to recognize an individual, group, and/or organization that has implemented and achieved energy conservation or a significant improvement in energy-related productivity through the application of new technology, practices, and/or engineered methods in the iron and steel producing sector. The project must have been completed within two calendar years preceding the year in which the application is submitted.

ArcelorMittal Shelby received the award for its work to implement Linde REBOX® oxyfuel solutions on its rotary hearth furnace. ArcelorMittal worked together with Linde to convert the furnace from air-fuel to complete flameless oxyfuel operation to reduce fuel consumption by nearly two-thirds in the billet reheating operation at its Shelby, Ohio, seamless tube mill.

Lantz is General Foreman and Senior Process Engineer for the Seamless Tube Mill of ArcelorMittal Shelby. In 2007, he was the project manager of the successful retrofit of the seamless tube, which has resulted in a 60% reduction in specific energy usage, 92% reduction in NOx emissions, and 25% increase in reheating throughput capacity.

“It is an honor to have received the 2009 AIST Energy Achievement Award,” said Lantz. “It recognizes ArcelorMittal’s strategic commitment to sustainability. As an industry leader, we focus on maintaining operational excellence while investing in projects that will strengthen our cost position and improve environmental performance.”

AIST is an international technical association of more than 15,100 professional and student members, representing iron and steel producers, their allied suppliers, and related academia. The association is dedicated to advancing the technical development, production, processing, and application of iron and steel.
